Stokstraat: how traders’ homes became brothels where the rich now shop

Text: The Complex Society

Stokstraat is known as one of the most exclusive shopping streets in The Netherlands, situated in an area called Stokstraatkwartier in Maastricht. The beautiful buildings, many of which are monuments, have an interesting history. Once the homes of traders, until the bourgeoisie started leaving the city centre during the 19th century when industrialization turned the city into a magnet for workers. The street then became notorious for its bars and brothels, and poverty ruled. During the 1950s the municipality took over and bought most of the buildings. It was the beginning of a transformation into the street as we now know it.
